Character Descriptions for The Rocky Horror Show

FRANK N FURTER – High baritone (Top F or G). Very masculine, but also very feminine, alpha-alien. Not just a man in women’s clothing – he is the strutting personification of gender non-specific fierceness. Wide range of ages possible, as long as charisma is evident.

JANET – Soprano (Top F). Young romantic lead. Naïve and innocent – but that’s all about to change.

BRAD – Tenor (Top G). Other romantic lead. Also naïve and innocent – but that’s also about to all change.

RIFF RAFF – Tenor (Top G). Igor-like minion of Dr. Frank N Furter. Spooky and smirking. Youngish, though a wide range of ages is possible.

MAGENTA – Mezzo (Top C or D) Another minion of Dr. Frank N Furter, usually dressed as the maid. Wild. Youngish, though a wide range of ages is possible.

COLUMBIA – Mezzo (Top C or D) Another minion, though more of a groupie than a servant. Youngish, though a wide range of ages is possible. Needs to be able to tap. Often doubles as the Usherette at the beginning.

NARRATOR – Should be older. Great speaking voice, as if he’s introducing “Masterpiece Theatre.” Possible non-singing role.

ROCKY – Tenor. Dr. Frank N Furter’s creation, and therefore the epitome of physical perfection. Need to be in great shape and wear little clothing.

EDDIE – Baritone (Top F). Cool bike guy, in the tradition of James Dean or Marlon Brando. Columbia has a thing for him. Could also double as Dr. Scott, though possibly not in this case.

SCOTT – Talk/Singing role. Former teacher of Brad’s. Very academic-looking. In a wheelchair. Could be older if not doubled with Eddie.

4 (OR 6) PHANTOMS – Ensemble. All different vocal ranges. Ideally an equal number of men and women. Sing and dance quite a bit.

Rock songs (or rock musical theatre songs) would be ideal audition pieces for this show. Anything that shows off your range. Actual songs from the show would be fine.

In this humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940s through to the early 1970’s , a stranded couple end up in a castle where aliens have sinister plans for mankind.

“A musical that deals with mutating identity and time warps becomes one of the most mutated, time-warped phenomena in show business.” – The New York Times

**Please note that this show contains strong language and adult themes.

Psycho Beach Party – auditions

Click here to receive emails about our shows, auditions, and opportunities to volunteer!

West Coast Players will hold auditions for Psycho Beach Party, by Charles Busch, on Sunday and Monday, April 9th and 10th, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the theatre. Directed by Keven Renken.

Production dates are June 2 to 18, 2017 (3 weekends).

The award-winning author of The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife gives “Gidget” beach party epics and Hitchcock psychological suspense thrillers a shotgun marriage! Chicklet Forrest, a teenage tomboy, desperately wants to be part of the surf crowd on Malibu Beach in 1962. One thing getting in her way is her unfortunate tendency towards split personalities. Among these are: a check out girl, a radio talk show hostess, a male model, and the accounting firm of Edelman and Edelman. Her most dangerous alter ego is a sexually voracious vixen with nothing less than world domination on her mind.

Auditionees will read from the script .  They must also come prepared to tell a joke – a story joke that builds to the punch line rather than a simple question and answer joke (“What do you call a woman with one leg?”  “Eileen.” for instance, is a no-no).  The characters are as follows:

CHICKLET – a perky, irrepressibly cheerful teenager whose main goal in life is to become a surfer.  Under stress, however, she reverts to one of many different personalities (some of which are down-right frightening).  The person playing this role needs to be able to do lightning-fast vocal, physical and personality changes.  Works best if performed by a man in drag.

MRS. FORREST – Chicklet’s mother – it would be great if she were the spitting image of Joan Crawford, both in looks and personality.  This role also works best if done in drag.

BERDINE – Chicklet’s best friend.  She is a hopeless nerd, but a nerd with spunk.

MARVEL ANN – ostensibly a friend of Chicklet and Berdine’s, though she mainly tolerates them.  A gorgeous high school vamp, she is absolutely boy crazy.

BETTINA BARNES – an incredibly glamorous movie star(let) on the lam from her studio.  Marilyn Monroe would be a good place to start.  She may not seem very bright – unlike Monroe, it may not be an act.

STAR CAT – the “leading man” of the piece, a handsome and smart guy who is abandoning the college life for that of a surfer.

KANAKA – Star Cat’s “Bud,” the quintessential surfer dude who is both fascinated and repelled by one of Chicklet’s kinkier alter egos.

PROVOLONEY – a scrappy little surfer, the joker of the group.

YO-YO – his best friend, struggling with his attraction to Provoloney.

NICKY and DEE-DEE – handsome beach bum and sexy chick in a bikini (think Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, though she never wore a bikini – and if you don’t know who they are, shame on you!  Google them!).

Because of the adult nature of the piece, all performers should be at least 18 years of age.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike – auditions

Click here to receive emails about our shows, auditions, and opportunities to volunteer!

West Coast Players will hold auditions for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, by Christopher Durang on Monday and Tuesday, February 20th and February 21st, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the theatre. Directed by Donna Donnelly.

Production dates are April 21 to May 7, 2017 (3 weekends).

Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia live in the family home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Named after Chekhov’s characters by their theater-enthusiast professor parents, Vanya and Sonia have yet to grow up. After spending their adulthood looking after their now-dead parents, neither has a job, and money is provided by their movie star sister, Masha. Their stolid lives are shaken when Masha announces she plans to sell the house. Mix in a clairvoyant cleaning lady, a gorgeous but dimwitted younger lover, and a sweet and determined neighbor and this Tony Award-winning play will have you wondering if having a Chekhov name destines you to a Chekhov life.

Great comedic actors are sought for this Christopher Durang play.

  • 2 females : 45 to 55
  • 1 female: early to mid 20’s
  • 1 male: late 20’s
